Oils and their rise in popularity

Oils have increased in popularity so it makes sense that lotions and products with oils have also gone up in popularity - unfortunately, not all of them are safe for use on acrylics. That's why oils that are specifically designed for sunbeds are being “pushed” onto sunbed users.

There are plenty of amazing oils that ARE acrylic-safe. This blog isn’t about making people fear oils on a sunbed, they can be extremely effective and feel great. However, with the amount of damage that they can cause it is vital that everyone who uses sunbeds is aware of what to avoid.

What are the signs of a safe product?

  • Oils designed specifically for sunbeds will be safe as they are made for a purpose - if you are purchasing lotions or oils that are marketed mainly for moisturising or for use outdoors, they’re most likely not safe for use on acrylic
  • Oils or lotions that contain alcohol are a major red flag and should not be put anywhere near acrylics. Alcohol is one of the main no-go ingredients for sunbeds. Why? Because it causes abrasions on acrylics to get worse or even worse, causes micro-cracks

More on alcohol

The alcohol damages the composition of the acrylic by causing microcracks, cloudiness and abrasions that damage the integrity of the surface. This just means that the acrylic needs to be replaced more often, as the acrylic is blocking that lovely UV from getting through as it should.

This isn’t to say that lotions or oils that contain alcohol cannot be used at all. You can still use your favourite lotions and oils with alcohol… just use them outside or on standups if the salon you go to allows it.

But if oil is unsafe for acrylics, how is it safe for my skin?

Simply put, our skin isn’t acrylic. The main reason for oils and certain lotions being banned from sunbed salons is because of the alcohol in them. The amount of alcohol in these products does not damage our skin, only drying out the skin of those with a sensitive skin type. Most of the time, the alcohol in these products is mainly for the texture/consistency of the formula, preserving it, and making it feel lightweight on your skin. Acrylics are sensitive to alcohol and are damaged very quickly from the use of it - even cleaning your acrylics with alcohol is an awful idea.

Science of a safe oil

Instead of using an oil that you can find in a shop, chemists have worked on making acrylic-safe oils that allow you to have a beautiful tan without costing salon owners thousands. Any oil that is labelled as specially made for sunbeds is an oil that has been constructed to keep acrylics safe. There are many of these on the market, including the fantastic Gold and Glow.

At the stage of developing its composition, it was clear that the cosmetic would be used in tanning salons. The goal was to create something that had a light and fast-absorbing formula that left no greasy film on the skin and was easily removed from the acrylic. And they did it!

Gold and Glow 101

Gold and Glow was created and it absorbs before the client even lies on the bed. It has been a top seller for years, appreciated by owners and salon go-ers for being not only easy to clean and apply but also for its exceptional effects on the skin.

G&G is a fast-drying oil that has incredible ingredients. A careful selection of natural oils including hemp oil, coconut oil and musk rose are boosted by the power ingredient of the year, retinoid. They work together to deeply nourish your skin and have an anti-ageing effect. It reduces discolouration and the skin becomes more elastic, firm and smooth with every use. A melanoblend formula builds the tan and makes it last longer, meaning if you skip a session, your tan is safe!

This is one of the most powerful tanning accelerators from 7Suns… and it is safe for acrylics too.
